NW South Dakota | Well being a western South Dakotan I will take a stab at this one
1 Our average annual rainfall is just under 16 inches................Not April thru September ......ANNUAL!! If you make a mistake rainfall isn't going to bail you out.
2 Our basis sucks............look at a map and see how far we are from anywhere!
3. Fertilizer prices are probably the most expensive of any location in the lower 48 states!
4. Our soils need lots of fertilizer as they are high in Mg and Ca so they tie up our Phos. Our soils were excellent 10000yrs ago before they washed away and built Louisiana.
5. Fuel prices are high here............I confess I don't know why.... they shouldn't be.
6 Your local elevator might be 50 to 100 miles away. I see a lot of folks on Ag talk dealing with a dilemma of "Do I go to ElevatorA 5 miles away or go to Elevator B 9 miles away?" Yeah.....Not a worry here ;-)
There are probably many things I have left out. All of the above are factored in with the price of land.
I should add I love living here despite the above challenges!!!
