Your last statement makes more sense than most understand. Why do you think most dirt moving companies have full time mechanics? It's because it is a very high roi position. Shop rates are beyond insane. There are 2 things I do on the farm that pay me very well. One is shopping and negotiating inputs and the other is wrenching. It amazes me how an hour or two meeting with input suppliers can equate to $10-20k savings. My mindset has changed completely in the last 2 years. No suppliers will keep me hostage. I run my buisness not them, it is my job to keep me in buisness. That means I may not always use the same old suppliers for my inputs.
