In the 70's, we farmed with my uncle. We stopped for noon in the field with tables, etc.. The meals were better than we had the rest of the year. Usually fresh pies, fruits, chicken, ribs, meatballs, everything you could think of. They'd also bring a lunch box with sandwiches, drinks and cookies. Enough to get you until 11. Harvest hours were 6:30 am to 11 pm. Wheat harvest alone was 3 weeks long.
Now we don't stop for anything. My wife ran the combine until this year, so I had to grab lunch for both of us, either at the house or cafe. Wheat harvest is only 3 days long now with no weather problems. Less acres but more combines 3 times bigger each. | |
