I haven't read the other responses so maybe this have been said, but, he might feel a little defensive about the current productivity of his ground.  He could feel that you are "insulting him" by suggesting his ground needs tile.  I would tell him that the new hybrids have huge potential for yields when the ground is tiled.  That way it doesn't look like he has a problem but that the new hybrids have the problem.
