Why not frost seed clover in the spring? I would think you would get more growth plus let the volunteer wheat grow after combining. Terminate as late as you can wait in the fall and rip it then. Where we did this our ground seems much more mellow in the spring. Frost seeding is easy at a time of year when not much else is going on.
