Subject: RE: How We Used to Eat (1953 - 1955 or so)

Pittsburg, Kansas

My dad told me about early in his farming career in the winter cutting hedge posts to sell. Crosscut saw and ax. Hired a neighbor that needed a job for a dollar a day to help. The neighbor brought a home canned jar of plums each day for lunch. That is what they had, so that is what he ate for lunch. A jar of canned plums.

My dad's favorite lunch when I was a small kid (around 1960) was a scrambled egg sandwich and when there were tomatoes in the garden a big tomato with a salt shaker in a brown paper bag. That and a water jug. Leave at about daylight and see him back home as the sun was setting.
