My dad grew up in southwestern Oklahoma in the midst of the Dust Bowl. Poor as Job's turkey was one of the descriptions he used. He told me that many times, his lunch in his little tin lunch bucket for school was bacon grease between two chunks of cornbread. By the time he turned 16, he's hitchhiked to California and back home twice, working where he could find work along the way.
