NC Iowa | My grandfather died in 1925 with small 8 kids and a mortgage. The depression was just starting in farm country then. Somehow my grandmother kept the family and the farm together.
Back then if the county health officials determined the kids were not being properly fed and clothed they could be removed from the home and placed in an orphanage. They were in fear of those visits. My dad said that they were poorer than poor.
all 8 kids grew up to be productive adults and all raised good families. | |
