Farming transition is the most challenging of all business transitions. First of all not all family's have qualified son's to pass it to. This is probably the number one reason farms go out of business. A corporate company is constantly transitioning but a farm only does it once in its business cycle. Put on top of that the farm is more than a job, its a vocation that is hard to give up. Having said all that, when you give something up so the next generation take off and be successful with it, can be the most gratifying way to retire. If you are trying to transition to some one who is toxic or uncapable then it is painful.
