Central Nebraska | Just like the rest have said, there are a to of different factors that go into calving schedules. Feeding in the evening does seem to help cows calve during the day but it also makes it a scramble to look over the groups before dark. Some operations check only a few times a day while others have day and night crews. Most people in this area try and time things so they're only calving out 50-75 head at a time as the regular work doesn't stop just for calving. Heifers are usually the most work so they usually start in mid Feb and run for a few weeks until the regular cows get going. Calving ease genetics have made that job lots easier, but there are still a few that need a little help. By the time you keep track of everything with 10-20 new calves a day on top of feeding and regular work there isn't a lot of extra time. Luckily things were just getting started when the bottom fell out of the thermometer a couple weeks ago instead of in full swing. | |
