We calve heifers starting in early April and check them about every four hours, not so much for calving trouble but because heifers are stupid. A lot of times a heifer with a water bag will be claiming another heifers fresh newborn. Run her into a lot by herself and she'll definitely claim her own when it comes. Our cows go to native range about May 10th and don't get checked at all. I'll check water every day and keep the mineral tubs full and might see some new ones on the way but that's the extent of my cow checking. I tell people that God checks my cows.

I used to calve heifers and cows in March and April in a lot and our death loss is lower now than it used to be. As long as we don't get a two day rain/snow event with the temp in the 30's in early May it's a walk in the park. Our weather has changed in the last 15 years. Our springs have been cooler and wetter in general lately. We never want to be getting too many calves a day until after Mothers Day.
