Subject: Calving on large herds

Ludington/Manistee MI area

I’m a extremely STO in the beef world.   I’m curious how frequently the BIG boys check for calves (both dairy and beef)  last month we have been slowly calving and I’ll got out before bed, if it’s nasty and I think someone is close the middle of the night, then first thing in the morning either the wife or I go out.  During the day it’s hit and miss.  The guys with large herds how often do you check?   For the dairy guys calving isn’t just a short season.  I wouldn’t take a monstrous dairy to average a calf or two a day.  Do the big boys check every 3-3.5 hours?   For me it’s a loop around the  main hang out looking at ear tag numbers what’s for example  26, 18, 30 doing yup they are with the herd and no hooves sticking out.

I realize for some it’s just looking at a IPhone or IPad but still need to wake up log on and be coherent enough to analyze it.

Just curious what others do.  Thinking about the hours we put in checking cows and extrapolate it out.
