| EE's starting out are likely $65k or better depending on area and industry. Techs that can do basic PLC work could be as low as $25/hr or 50k/yr... The engineer may be eligible for a bonus and the tech may work lots of overtime so maybe they come out even in the end. I would say the top 25% of EEs make a lot more money than top 25% of techs as well as big spread on the median of each group vis-a-vis. Excluding bigger city areas, I bet most midwestern engineers fall in the 80-100k range and tech guys are probably working a fair amount of OT to hit that.
I have worked with a factory that had EEs programming PLCs, techs, and basic maintenance workers so its defiantly something all levels are capable of learning. The big money comes in play when the factory has to go outside to a contractor to do the programming for various reasons. The bill for simple program flash makes having a well trained and competent person on staff look pretty cheap from what I have seen. | |
