Your premise is not correct. My engineering school is in the top 20 in the US for the highest starting wages.

Electrical Engineer BS average starting $59,977.00
Electrical Technology Associates average starting $50,516.00

Mechanical Engineer BS $56,592.00
Mechanical Engineering
Technology Associates $49,900.00

In the sciences mathematics is about the same as mechanical engineer as mathematicians can be engineers. Physics is quite a bit less as well as chemistry because they do not have the extensive mathematics training.

In the longer term the engineers will increase the salary gap even more compared to the Techs on average. But for the educational level of the techs they do just fine.
