For the absolute cheapest option, either move the hydrant to the tank or the tank to the hydrant. I'm a big fan of cobett waterers, although I'll be the first to admit they're not perfect. If you can put them out of the wind, right next to the feeding area, and feed in the evening, they absolutely shine. $1,000 for the unit plus whatever it costs you to install, and a load of rock around it. Never again have a thermostat quit, or an element burn out, or froze up because of a power outage. I've got three I'm using every day right now. The attached pic is the west farm, with 45 fall pairs on it, being fed at noon with an old corn crib and a barn as a wind break. At home, feeding the cows 3/8 of a mile away, fed in the morning, there's a couple inches of ice every morning. Break it and it's good til well after dark when they stop drifting in for water.
