Subject: RE: Nitrogen Credit from Cover Crops

PROSPECT, TENNESSEE
I have never used a N credit from my cover crops. They are a gift to the soil. I use 10 to 20#Triticale or rye, 10 to 20# winter oats 5 to 10#crimson clover, 1# brassica of some sort. When the straw increases on the surface we up the legumes, if not we up the oats. I use less P&K than we used to(per grid samples), but use more N. Yields are also bigger on average too. Its a wash, but my soils are resilient to weather extremes. We planted the 2020 crop literally in the mud, but the root mass in the top two inches forgave me, was the best crop ever on this farm. When the heat and dry hit in July the straw held moisture and kept soil temps down.
