I have what we consider "heavy clay" ground here in New York. From what I have learned, the biggest challenge is working it at the right moisture. It doesn't matter what you crack it open with (first pass), what matters is that you get it worked once it dries enough to crumble, but before it dries out. Timing will be your key. In our area many have converted to the vertical speed discs, and they work good, if you continue to work the clods while they are moist. Once it dries out you need a field cultivator to bring ground moisture up (if that's an option in your area).
