Kind of like the parents that hold their kids back another year to make them better at sports. Taking it the extreme, MLB, NBA, NFL players are obvious no matter what the age. Throwing $s at the sport is about popularity and social status not performance.
If I remember correctly MLB still uses wooden bats and get it done.
