Look for a way to eliminate the ice cream. I am a former dairy farmer and at first recoiled at the idea of giving up milk and ice cream.

But now that I have cheese, sour cream and salsa as a dip, and heavy cream in my coffee I feel confident that I am doing more than before to make dairy products disappear from the shelves.

Watch out on the peanut butter, it can be loaded up with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. I don't use as much as I did earlier, but the Smuckers all natural, for example, has no added sugar. At first I thought the stuff looked nasty because it needs to be mixed on opening the jar, but came to prefer the taste to the standard sweetened varieties.

In my case at least I was somewhat surprised at the degree to which sweets lost their appeal by the time I ventured to taste them again.
