Sorry I thought you were talking about the hog index, there's probably a cattle index that I'm not familiar with.
I think the real problem with all of these markets is that the front month should always be in "delivery" and it should be easier to make a delivery or force a delivery to be made
(if you're long and want to take delivery
).
It seems to me that the futures market on cattle should go away...
