Dumbfarmer, I have seen that here before also, actually just a yr ago this spring, there was 1100+ acres on auction in our area. There was a young guy there trying to buy his first farm and the neighbors let him bid without bidding against him, out of the area was the other bidder, when the young guy quit bidding, then they bid, but until then, they werent going to bid against him and were going to let him have it. But better for one of the neighbors to hav it then the outsider who was bidding against him, a neighbor ended up with it.
