Actually the distance between points of contact do have an effect. As one can expect the voltage is highest at the point of the strike and the voltage drops off with increasing distance. If you have 2 feet (or four in the case of cows) touching the ground at the same time within the area where the lightning sent a charge through the ground then the further apart your feet are the greater the difference in voltage will be. It is for this same reason that if you have to exit a vehicle near a downed power line it is important to jump from the vehicle and keep hopping away while keeping your feet together. If you simply walk away the difference in voltage where one foot touches the ground and where the other touches could be very large and the different voltage will cause electricity to travel through you in an attempt to equalize.

Of course like you mentioned if the strike is close enough or a direct strike you will likely be killed anyways.
