As you can tell, the answer depends on the unit. And the experience run the range.

Does you son want to hone his mechanic's skills? The 6.0 will could well do that.
I've had a couple. Still have one. So far, I've spent under $200 on repair parts over 10 years. 1 EGR valve. 1 serpentine belt idler.

So I've come out well so far. But a lot of other people have not. As a general rule, the 6.0 does not suffer fools, chips, dumb modifications, or deferred maintenance.

If you can find a good one, it will probably sound by now. But don't buy anything where you do not know the history unless you are an expert on the 6.0. That said, there is probably a better first vehicle for you son.
