Thats a tough payback scenario in today's economy. Honestly I would doubt you could use much of a soybean yield gain if that's in your rotation. I see little yield gain in soybeans especially in years where only 5 inches are needed for corn. Corn on corn is the only potential payback scenario.

I'm in an area where we add 3-5" on a typical year and depending on soil type, I'd guess in corn you gain 25bu/acre on average. I have sandy areas that gain 100bu but when you average it out 25bu will catch it based on non-irrigated fields close by.

You've got an uphill battle with your payback calculation. Your r&m will be very low for the first 10yrs-I've seen them be 0.
