| It won't help deputies showing up at your door, but for the debt collectors you can request that "Per the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act I formally request that you no longer contact us concerning these matters." Legally you actually have to submit this to them in writing, but there's a chance they might accept it over the phone.
My wife had some very old debt (over ten years ago) that every schmuck wanted to collect on and began calling me in attempts to contact her once we were married. I'd ultimately waste their time by requesting they mail me a verification of debt. I'd usually review it, finding they are just a company who bought unpaid debt from other companies or collectors and had no legal authority due to statute of limitations. I'd respond back with a certified letter requesting they cease contacting us and that would be the end of that. | |
