Yes, organic will not be a saviour to farms in financial trouble. I figure it costs $300/acre to transition.
I’ve heard local rumblings that the organic thing is maturing and not the fun and profits it used to be.
I think transitioning to organic now for financial reasons is more likely to be the last nail in the coffin than the savior. They’ll be out transition costs and time, and at the wrong end of the learning curve. They could then be selling into a saturated market since so many acres are transitioning now, in which case the products could be the same or lower priced than conventional despite the huge cost sunk in to produce them. The potential is there for a financial train wreck.
