SW Iowa | There is some research being done at Kansas State quantifying weed suppression benefits. I sat through a presentation by Dr Anita Dille at Practical Farmers of Iowa conference yesterday (presented remotely on account of winter weather travel issues) and it covered a lot of data I'd not seen before. KSU research is finding a significant decrease in weed quantity, and very drastic reduction in weed biomass (meaning weeds that were there were small), with covers. Also observing that having a cover crop affects when different weeds try to emerge (shifting emergence later--resulting in smaller weeds for better control with herbicide / canopy closure shading out). | |
