SW Iowa
There is some research being done at Kansas State quantifying weed suppression benefits. I sat through a presentation by Dr Anita Dille at Practical Farmers of Iowa conference yesterday (presented remotely on account of winter weather travel issues) and it covered a lot of data I'd not seen before. I think PFI will have videos of the conference presentations available online at some point, but a google search turned this up that has some of the same info: http://mccc.msu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/2017MCCC-FC-Dille.pd... KSU research is finding a significant decrease in weed quantity, and very drastic reduction in weed biomass (meaning weeds that were there were small), with covers. Also observing that having a cover crop affects when different weeds try to emerge (shifting emergence later--resulting in smaller weeds for better control with herbicide / canopy closure shading out).
