Northeastern Pa.
I don't know why there are chains on anything anymore. When I worked at a paper plant we had all chain drives on production lines until the 80's then switched to all belt drives. Reduced noise level by a lot and it was a whole lot easier changing a belt vs. chain and no maintenance. I hate the feeder house chain, unload auger chain and return conveyor chains on our JD combine. Noisy and it's a 50/50 deal on if lube actually helps with all the dust that attaches itself to the chain after lubing. Yep go with good belts. I think it's the only way to go. As far as combines go the simplest drives I've seen were on a newer Massey I saw at the York Pa. Farm show 3 years ago.
