They are to a degree. I actually sit on the hydraulic hose and fittings standards committee at SAE. There are just so many "standard" terminations from years of improvements and increases in hydraulic pressure and sealing over the last 60 years. Some countries also have their standard terminations too. Japan, Germany, US are the big ones. Moving all towards ISO standards though.
Things that need to be standardized. Whats your list?
