exfarmer - 12/5/2018 10:54 If you want to include costs forward in the calculation, you are relying on Money magazine's guess at the future value of the carry forward tax deductions. Did they come to be worth that much ? Were they worth even more? Hard to calculate from a magazine article from 2011? But fair enough,I will take it at face value. Your other link, showing that the ag subsidy was only,I say agin only- 20 billion per year was more than enough to resolve the argument that you should not complain about the bailout of GM. ONLY 20 billion, what was the total of the ag subsidies over the same period of time as the Money magazine calculated the value of GM tax breaks? 50 billion or 100 billion? What is the value of the increased value of land because of the floor subsidized crop insurance puts under production risk? How much of a farmers net worth is due to that? You think because I point out the hypocrisy of believing that the government gets to decide what business decisions GM has to make because it was bailed out by the government while taking a greater amount for your own industry means I am anti farmer or anti farm subsidies . You are wrong. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Pot- meet kettle. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Whatever cliche you would like- they all apply.

I don't support the gm bailout or ag subsidies. Just correcting the record. You will note i just responded to the quoted sentence.  Your fact was not in fact, a fact. IMO of course. The GM tax loss carry forwards still have not all been all use but they haven't paid any taxes and were profitable before 2017. The deferred tax asset is still on their books.
A point i think  you miss on this tariff payment is that Trump is using it as a tool so we can hang strong in the China trade talks.  "We can take your retaliation China and stay strong." I don't know the amounts but the gov. is collecting a lot money from import tariffs and why not use some of it to help those most affected by china's retaliation. This is a short-term matter unlike other systemic ag subsidies.
