Subject: RE: Market driven cover cropping

SC Wisconsin

A couple quotes from the article:

"It’s probably only a matter of time before Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland and others come up with similar incentives. I certainly would prefer to see the market, rather than government regulations, drive the use of cover crops."

  • Incentives from buyers/processors often evaporate or reflect the minimum $ amount necessary to create an outcome.
  • Sustainability in the eyes of many (buyers/processors/consumers) is at times green washing and a component of marketing rather than true support of the concept.

"It’s a delicate balancing act between environmental responsibility and economic success, but more and more farmers are discovering the value cover crops offer, both in the Mid-Atlantic region and around the world."

  • Steve brings this back to reality with this statement. The reality is that the benefits farmers are seeing is what is driving the increased implementation on more acres.
In my opinion, the balancing act will be refined and we will continue to see some interesting permutations on how to improve this business of growing stuff.
