665 Farmer - 11/3/2017 05:30 2.3 bu increase in corn $3.00 per bu. Economics don't lie.

Many covers can be seeded for $6/a.  (Note that the + 2 bu/a in soybeans is $18 - 20).  The long-term benefits of increasing soil OM are well-known, so if a person can break even or even have a very small loss, cover crops are the logical choice.

$6 and acre? Are you gonna send me free exapta parts to rebuild my jd 1990 drill seeding all these cover crop acres,so that I can plant for free? Oh, don't forget to send the fuel truck over.

I was thinking seed costs only.  You got me :-)   Variable costs of running the drill would be another $6. So you can still come out money ahead with covers ahead of soybeans, but ahead of corn is more challenging.  And I've been saying that for a long time.

Agree about working better with crops going into beans vs. corn. Anyway covers are working here FYI. That being stated some our best corn was on rotated wheat ground that had no straw removed and covers of sorghum, radish and oats. Extra n applied. Monitor bouncing off 300 often. This on 160 Aph ground.
