This training video for a rescue is pretty good and talks about the importance of not having other people walking in the grain around the victim since it adds pressure to them.

The need to use the plastic mesh to distribute the weight is important. The grain pressure around them makes breathing more and more difficult as it compresses their chest and lungs where they cannot get enough air in.

Perhaps memorial donations could be directed to purchase one of these rescue chambers if one is not already available or to get a  training demonstration set up for local fire department personnel and all elevator employees so they understand all the key factors involved so everyone is informed and hopefully this can be prevented from ever happening again.

My sympathies on the loss of your friend.

We are in a dangerous industry and especially those of us who work alone need to be very acutely aware of our surroundings and dangers at all times.
