Ripley, Ontario Canada | Grass feed value goes down quickly after it heads out, soon being no better than straw. Wrapping and storing wet makes it more palatable, saves leaves and time. In 10 days he will be starting to reach the point where quality really starts dropping. Also grass stops growing when it heads out and puts all energy into making seed. In places where it rains in the summer, if you let the grass head out, you don't get more new growth, so less total feed. If you cut it or graze it before it heads out you get the regrowth too. In Jim's case his biggest problem is getting weather to do something with it even though he has given up on dry hay and is just planning to get it off the field ASAP, he still needs a few dry days in a row. | |
