| Jon, it is possible a new version of Norton allows your computer to run faster, and if it does so, then that likely explains why your system seems to be faster when surfing the net. Anti-virus programs can really hog resources. Some, when fully turned on scan everything. McAfee's On Access scan will scan everything associated with starting a program. With email scanning turned on, it will scan the email before downloading, after it scans your email program files when it is loaded. It's possible the old version of Norton was slowing things down by scanning everything as it was being used. With a new machine, it might be speedy enough to handle On Access scanning. As the system gets older and more programs may be added, the hard drive becomes fragmented, and the virus program is updated, your system eventually slows. Turning off On Access scanning on virus programs is fine, as long as you have a complete system scan scheduled to run periodically. | |
