Pretty solid advice, and some very good work can come out of those bodies and kit lenses.  When glass starts getting expensive is when you need to reach out a long ways or use it handheld in low light conditions.  For a simple and versatile walking around setup, those will do just fine and still be something of value you can build from if you wish.
