Subject: RE: No Farm Bill

central - east central Minnesota -

Gromit - 10/27/2012 08:37 Ed, we had an opportunity yesterday to meet with Sen Al Franken at one of our neighbors house. He talked a bit about the farm bill. Of course as we know, the Senate passed a bipartisan farm bill that kept the crop insurance subsidies, eliminated the direct payments, and had provisions for the food stamp program. The House ag committee came up with a bipartisan farm bill, too. It was pretty much like the Senate bill but it did have some direct payments for farmers, although with a limit. They did take an informal poll and it would have passed. However, it had more democrats voting for it than Republicans so Franken felt that the House leadership were waiting for the elections and lame duck session to get over before anything will get done. So Boehner wouldn't even allow it on the floor. It was encouraging when Franken stated that there is a lot of bipartisanship when it comes to agriculture and the farm bill. Its the radicals from both parties that hold things up.

Yes, the old political party's one uping each other . . . .
That's too bad - holding up legislation, so one party or the other can use it (or not use it) to their advantage.
I'm kind'da interested in the oldest farm bill legislation, that says, we are to revert to its parity pricing program - When would that kick in ?
