First, it makes no difference whether they get paid to do the warranty work or not, it is their obligation under the terms of their contract with NH. They do get paid but at a rate that may be lower than what it cost them to do the repair, but they still have to complete the repair correctly. Most warranty repairs are paid on a flat rate that is based on new equipment with nothing stuck or unforeseen problems in the repair, done by an experienced technician that has done the repair at least 20 times prior to this time. An example is, 15 years ago Case had bad pistons in the 1688 combines and we had to replace them, warranty time was 22.5 hours to remove the engine, strip it to a bare block, replace the orings on the liners, replace the pistons reassemble the engine and reinstall the engine in the combine, fill oil and water and test run for 1 hour. our best time was about 28 hours.

So, no, dealers don't make money on warranty work but they still have to do it if they expect to make money on a repeat sale. Now, he may be prioritizing service work, leaks are fixed after repairs that stop a farmer from going in the field.

Next, I don't care if the dealer thinks that the extra valve is a waste of money, that is not his decision, the customer wants the valve, is willing to pay for it, so they should order the parts and get it put in for you. And say thank you for your patronage when it is finished.

One thing about getting better service is forget about the salesman after the sale, he has done his job and most don't have time to talk to you unless the cash register is ringing. Go directly to the service manager or whoever runs the shop, you will generally get better service going right to the shop. The problem with the salesman is he really doesnt understand what is wrong, he will call the shop manager and tell him that there is a leak on the tractor somewhere and then he forgets about it.
