south central IOWA | Joelt, I've done the math and know what the calves are going to cost. All I have to go off of is what the breds were bringing today. If I use fairly conservative numbers I gross what my cows can "roughly" produce per head. The plus side would be that I could handle twice the heifers as I could cows. The downside is I wouldn't get to enjoy calving in the mud. :( I always thought that a guy was to "buy low, sell high" and that is what I would be doing with the cows. It would take a drastic swing in the market to make this deal sting real bad and even at that, the calves my cows produce would be worth less too. If it gets so bad I can't afford to sell, at least I would have a herd of heifers to start my cowherd over with.
Jim, I'm not sure how many people were bidding but if I was to guess there was 3 or 4 involved. They were the only pairs of the sale. They was some tough looking cows too and I'm still shaking my head.
