Subject: Re: finger or vacuum units

This whole discussion leads me to wonder how close to the "ideal" spacing we need to be . Can someone point to some real research which deals with the topic of seed spacing and its effect on final yield? I plant with a finger pickup machine. The units are run on a stand every year and various parts replaced (insert cha-ching cha-ching sound of dealer's cash register) . Then I plant at 4.5 mph. I have neighbors who plant with cyclo planters. They don't have the expense of rebuilding meters or the hassle of filling 12 little boxes and then emptying out the two cups of seed that won't feed into the meters. They plant at 7 mph and get twice as much done as me because they aren't stopping as often to fill their 12 little boxes. When the corn comes up I know I have better spacing than them. What I don't know is whether that translates into higher yields.
