| 30 years ago if you saw a double chances are one plant would be barron or both plants would have nubbins. With todays hybrids they will probably both produce a good ear. Years ago I had a spot in the field that gophers took a lot of corn. There was one plant that had no plants around it for about five feet. That plant had 5 good ears at harvest. Todays hybrids would have only had two. A couple years ago a friend got the driver and driven sprokets mixed up and planted about six acres at 49,000 before he caught it. He did a yield check that fall and it wasn't much less than where he planted 30,000. Thirty years ago they all would have been barron. The studies show that spacing makes a difference, and I agree, but I bet the difference gets less every year because of genetics. | |
