The instructions tell you to only have one spot where the dog can cross over, and always do it on a leash.

We only take our dogs out in one spot, and normally on our golf cart or Ranger. They can leave out the driveway in a car to go to the vet, but walking there is only one 'exit'. 

I don't know about the pond....I think the collars are waterproof(check to be sure if you go this route), then put the fence around the pond if you want him to be able to go swimming.
