Let's see, you said taxes would increase by $70 on a house assessed at $100,000. It would increase $1.27/ac. on farmland assessed at $1,200. It would increase $150 on a business valued at $100,000. Ok, if you own a 1,000 acres of land ( and we will go with the $1,200 assessment but it sounds low to me) that would be an increase of $1,270 a year for the farmer. Now look at a business. Let's say it is worth $1,000,000. Not many small businesses will be worth less. That would be an increase of $1,500 for him. Where do the students of the school come from? The farmer might have 2 or 3 kids. The business owner might have 2 or 3 kids. But I bet far more of the houses have kids in them. So you want home owners to pay $70 a year more, the farmer $1,200 a year more and the business to pay $1,500 more. Yep, that sounds fair to me. (sarcasm) I am sure the business owner and the farmer already pay far more in property taxes than the average home owner before the increases. Shouldn't the ones benefiting from the new school share their part of the cost? |
