I don't know much about 1031 exchanges. Is it just for real estate and why? If I sell stock for a large gain why shouldn't I be allowed to purchase more stock without paying taxes like a 1031 exchange? If property is taken by eminent domain, I could understand the logic of a 1031 exchange. Perhaps a better way would be to allow only an acre for acre replacement. If you sell 80 acres for a huge sum of money you could purchase another 80 and then be required to pay tax on the balance.
