Subject: Re: Fungicide/insecticide use this year

In 2008 on beans with fungicide and insecticide we had no yield gain or moisture difference on any maturity beans. 2009 with straight headline we had 7-8 bushel gain and no moisture differnce and no more green stems in 3.0 maturity and earlier beans. 3.0 and later were only 1-3 bushel better and same moisture. 2008 corn we had 20-31 bushels more with headline on corn in all numbers, whether or not they were suppose to show a response. One number that according to the seed company that should never need fungicide was our biggest response. 1.5-2% higher moisture also. In 2009 pretty consistently 1.5% higher moisture, but only 5-7 bushels higher yield. Some numbers lower and some higher, with only one check strip showing less bushels. We will spray the majority of corn and beans for 2010 unless we see absolutly no pressure at all. The insecticde on beans is a tough call for me, some seem to get a good response most years. Even with heavy bug pressure we have never had much of a response, except the dry years with spider mites. In 2009 we tried several different rates of headline and gallons of water, with no gain for higher rates of either. 2009 was all sprayed with the plane and 2010 all ground applied. We had much heavier GLS pressure in 09 than last year.
