I had the 4 bolt cover gasket start to leak last fall and did pretty much the same thing. Couldn't pin the leak down, so blew the pto housing off and wiped it clean as i could, filled with oil. I ran it until the dust got on it enough to see the leak, ordered the gasket to fix it and kept a check on the oil until it rained (Which wasn't long!!) and we had a break to fix it.
