For as "bad" as fentanyl is, it is literally a lifesaver for those who are unable to tolerate morphine for severe pain. Family member fell across a street curb and fractured a hip. Morphine administered in the ER dropped blood pressure to 53/33. This is not a sustainable situation. Slammed patient with fluids to attempt to bring BP back up close to normal range. Excess fluids brought on subsequent kidney issues, and following that, respiratory issues as kidneys and lungs fought over just who exactly had to deal with the excess fluid. Kidneys finally won, life was saved by pain being controlled with fentanyl. |
