Subject: RE: Grain Elevator Advice

I see a few people already told ya not to put a leg in a pit... but if you have hills like we do you'll be ok... we put ours in a pit but it is tiled out to the surrounding field. Our pit is about 4ft wide 4ft deep and 50 some ft long. we have a drive over U-trough to unload trucks as well as unload bins on the other side of the driveway. At the end of the pit is a 14in tile underground between bins and draining into the field. it is big enough to let out all the bees wings and fines and whatever else is in there. we just squirt it out with our spray nurse tank... 1000gal in a few mins sure cleans out a lot of crap that collects down there.

I would say if/when you look more into a leg, make sure the pulley diameter is pretty descent sized. Ours is only 9in diameter and at 3000 bu/hr it is too small... when you plug it the motor and gearbox keep turning but the belt inside burns off and falls inside the trunks. Not a fun fix. so... if the pulley diameter is larger there is more friction in there and you will just burn off v-belts or stall the motor, which are both easier fixes.

Someone also stated above that you can hook a PLC up to it to watch your amps and whatnot, which is a cool doodad if you want to go that route and spend more money, but you can hook up a simple over-amp relay for cheap. we were quoted at 80 bucks hired done by our electrition.

As far as brands... just look at farm shows and gather your info there. you should be able to see which ones are better constructed.
