Two words, workmen’s comp. Employers are so afraid of a claim they would rather have a flesh and blood robot that only performs the tasks they are extensively trained on; instead of paying on an “accident” when bubba decides to hook up 3phase thinking it’s 220 and collect while he goes fishing. It got so bad during the bakken boom they had safety meetings about shutting the door on the truck with an open palm mid door so they didn’t slam any fingers in it creating a claim.

If the greedy factory owners of the industrial revolution had used a little common sense OSHA wouldn’t have been started in the first place. But putting inward swinging doors on a building dealing with flammable goods or pushing workers for hours on the meat chain until they wet themself on the product ruined it for everyone. In came gov with at the time some good regulations but then it snowballed out of control over the last century as they needed more rules to enforce for job security. In turn they needed more agents to enforce the new rules and on and on. Reminds me of “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

Now that the genie is out of the bottle it’s all but over for US production. Unless it can be done robotically we just can’t compete with low wage nations.
