One of my friends worked in a factory and he was both a smart guy and capable guy.  He was telling me about an incident where a belt came off and he wasn't allowed to just put it back on.  They had to have a mechanic come and replace the belt.  Not a new belt, just put the same belt back on.

That type of thing was common, everybody has a job designation and only the person with that designation can do that job.

It's a combination of labor unions, OSHA and company policy.  There's no cure in our ever tightening and structured society.

Your buddy know how to laser align?  Proper belt deflection?   Torque specs?
